ORTHOLILL >> portfolio >> arthritis treatment
Osteoarthritis (OA, also known as degenerative arthritis, degenerative joint disease) is a result of trauma to the joint, infection or aging. It primarily impacts the articular cartilage which loses its flexibility and will be worn out.
Besides the mechanical also the biochemical cascade of joint destruction
is put into motion by release of inflammatory mediators.
This -at the end-
leads to inflammation and destruction of the joints. The patient usually
complains about start-up pain, stiffness and recurrent swelling.
Due to
pain-related rest of the joint (less movement and stress) the cartilage is not
supplied with enough nutrients. Once destroyed, cartilage does not have
tendency to regenerate so the prevention and early treatment of joint wear is
particularly important.
